The first positive energy hotel will open in the Arctic Circle

Where you thought Northern Lights hotels (to see the Northern Lights) couldn't get any weirder than treehouses, glass igloos and ice hotels, now there's a totally eco-friendly overwater spaceship.

The Svart hotel (which means “black” in Norwegian) is going to be an architectural gem. Nestled at the foot of the Svartisen glacier, this project, a collaboration between designers Snohetta, Arctic Adventure of Norway and Powerhouse energy, will push the boundaries of science.

When completed in 2021, it will be the world's first "positive energy" hotel, which should, technically, cost the Earth nothing. It will produce more than it consumes through the use of renewable sources such as wind, sun and water. A valuable asset in this arctic environment! In addition to its miraculous energy production, the hotel will consume 85% less energy than a traditional hotel. A small revolution! Anything extra will power equipment such as hair dryers and smartphones.

The hotel will therefore have to be built with minimal impact on the environment so that the rare plant species of the region and the blue ice of the glacier remain protected.

It will be built in the Norwegian region of Salten, and will glow at night like an alien who has just landed on the ocean. It should be as impressive in person as it is on paper. Its ring-shaped structure will have an upper and lower deck. The lowest to board the canoes and leave the hotel to go ice climbing or hiking. The upper part for the living quarters.

The circular design of the property and its large windows will not only allow to enjoy a 360 degree view of the fjords, mountains and glaciers but also to optimize the sunlight in the rooms, terraces and restaurants.

A place that will attract walkers in summer and lovers of the aurora borealis, which illuminate the nights in winter. A closeness to nature and a disconnection that can only do good.
